What Is a Standardized Patient?

A Standardized Patient (SP) is an actor who portrays a patient in a clinical setting. By following detailed case scripts, emotional tones and response patterns to simulate real-world medical encounters, SPs offer standardized, realistic portrayals that reflect the diversity of patients. This standardization ensures that every candidate is evaluated under equal conditions, reducing variability and bias and enhancing fairness across all exam sessions.

Individuals selected to join our SP program receive targeted training to best complement our assessments and events. Their preparation focuses on emotional authenticity and uniformity, enabling reliable evaluations throughout each encounter.

Who We Are

SPs may be hired to support events for either the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or the AIME Center, depending on the nature of the exam. Both organizations conduct high-stakes clinical assessments for medical professionals seeking certification in their fields. These exams are pivotal moments in a candidate’s career that test their clinical and communication skills.

  • The ABA is the leading certifying body for anesthesiologists. We uphold rigorous standards to ensure excellence in patient safety and quality clinical outcomes.
  • The AIME Center is the ABA’s dedicated testing facility. We deliver clinical assessments that are fair, valid and impactful.

Why Join Our SP program?

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or new to clinical acting, we welcome applicants who are committed to professionalism, emotional nuance and collaborative work. Actors selected for our SP program receive targeted training to complement our assessment events. You’ll learn how to:
